    ISTD 2012 - Matthew Taylor

    ‘It Happened On This Day…’
The first day of the battle of the Somme (1.07.1916) remains the largest bloodshed in a single day in British military history, almost 60,000 casualties. I recorded the events of this day through the eyes of individual soldiers and entire regiments, documenting their thoughts, feelings and actions. Using pre-1916 typefaces for body text and pull quotes and the typewriter for titles and telegrams ensures the book is relevant to the period. Furthermore, using carbon paper, I stressed each page individually representing the anguish and pain each soldier went through.

    ISTD 2012 - Ian York

    ‘The Waitress’

My interpretation of the story was that of confusion, and I believe that was the intention of the author. You have many possible readings of the story, the protagonist may possibly not even exist and this is suggested through the use of an unreliable narrator.
I wanted to take that theme and recreate it in a new format, using imagery and type in order to give this idea of the protagonist’s questionable existence. To go alongside the original story by Zipes, I wanted to create a first person narrative for each character within it and give each their own section of the story.
The imagery consists of a series of photographs that I took which were to highlight further this connection between the protagonist and the other characters within the story. You have these double images, so when you fold back part of the image you reveal the protagonist; this is to again put into question her existence.
Varying the size and layout of the different components allows for multiple stories to run alongside each other. Introducing colour and imagery to the interior of the publication also evokes the characteristics of a magazine.
